Orthodontist
Orthodontists are specialist dentists who use braces, retainers, and other devices to fix the way patients’ teeth are positioned. Here are statistics about being a orthodontist such as their role, there work place and their earnings.
Core Tasks
- Examine teeth visually and with x-rays, photographs, and plaster impressions
- Diagnose problems with teeth, such as crooked teeth, underbites, and overbites
- Fit braces or retainers to correct teeth
- Give advice on preventive dental care
- Supervise dental hygienists and other staff
- Most work for themselves in private practice
- Usually work 7 to 8 hours a day, 5 days a week
- Often on call when not in the office
- Performing delicate procedures can be mentally exhausting

Education & Training
- A Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree
- A graduate degree in orthodontics
- Pass a national orthodontics exam
- A licence to practise in your province or territory
